Working in the social work profession

Continuing Professional Education and Learning (CPEL)

We support the post-qualifying aspirations of social workers by enabling access to the CPEL programme. This provides a career pathway for social workers following graduation.

Framework for Continuing Professional Educational and Learning includes:

  • First 3 Years in Practice including the Consolidation Programme for Newly Qualified Social Workers
  • Experience Practice in Social Work Programme
  • Senior Practice in Social Work Programme
  • Consultant Social Work Programme

First 3 Years in Practice (F3YIP)

The framework consists of:
  • Induction to professional social work
  • Growing in competence and confidence
  • Mentoring and training
  • Consolidation Programme and renewal of registration
Please note - All social workers who qualified after April 2016 are required to complete the Consolidation Programme in their first three years of practice. Your renewal of registration is dependant on this. Further information can be accessed from Social Care Wales -

Last year, we launched our internal F3YIP programme, with speakers from the Social Care Wales, Ian Thomas and senior managers from across the local authorities.  Click here for more information on our internal programme.
